In April of 2016, the Peruvian people were divided as two presidential candidates ran an intense campaign to gain the love of the people. Unlike the United States and many other countries, the government of Peru is not dominated by any political parties. However, the country was divided as many of the southern provinces of Peru were in favor of American born Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (PPK), while the North was voting for Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of an imprisoned former Peruvian President, Alberto Fujimori. More specifically, the people of Piura were true to their Northern roots as the majority voted for Keiko. The first election resulted in a draw, causing a call for a mandatory re-election day in the month of June. This postponement of the election resulted in prolonging the national divide as each candidate labored diligently to gain the popular vote. The second election in June resulted in a victory for PPK. This unpopular decision in the Northern province of Peru (Piura) caused many dissentions and public riots as the people fought to overturn the election but were unsuccessful.
